The first ruler of the Greek state

In January of this year, celebrations were held on the island of Aegina near Athens to commemorate the memorable historic event – the swearing-in of the first Greek ruler Ioannis Kapodistrias, the former Minister of Foreign Affaires of Russia.

Kapodisrias was sworn in on January 26, 1828. He became the first governor of free Greece. In fact Greek state of modern times came into existence on Aegina.

In Aegina also held a general assembly of so-called urban network of Ioannis Kapodistrias. In it were sister cities, where Kapodistrias worked, lived or was born.

The Mayor of Aegina Dimitrios Mourtzis and the municipality are seeking decision to declare the date of the swearing-in of Kapodistrias as the public holiday.

Aegina was the first capital of independent Greece. The first bodies of Greek authorities hade been created there after liberation from the power of Ottoman Empire, exactly here Kapodistias opened the first Greek State Printing House.

The history of other European countries is also related to the name of Kapodistrias. In particular, he has made a huge contribution to the creation of the Swiss Confederation, the writing of its constitution, the establishment of regime of neutrality, the definition of country’s boundaries, which have remained unchanged for two hundred years.
