Crete island was the centre of Europe’s first advanced civilization, the Minoan (c. 2700–1420 BC). The archaeological site of Knossos Palace, famous for the legends such as Theseus and the Minotaur or Daedalus and Icarus, is just one of the miracles.
Besides the legendary historical places, Crete offers you a wide variety of beaches, such as the best-known turquoise lagoon of Elafonissi, or a wonderful 6-hour walk tour in the famous Samaria gorge.
Greece is known for its hospitality, Crete island is one of the most popular tourist destination in the country. Visitors can reach the island via international airport of Chania and Heraklion, or by boat to the main ports of Heraklion, Chania, Rethymno, Agios Nikolaos and Sitia. The ferry route takes 8-9 hours from Athens (Piraeus).
