A “donkey” taxi on Crete

On the island of Crete, the Provincial Council of Lasithi decided to legalize the work of firms and individuals, carrying tourists on donkeys in the area of the Lasithi plateau and in the vicinity of the cave of Zeus.

Over many years, illegal carriers have created many problems provoked complaints from tourists about improper treatment of animals, their use as a working tool and arbitrary prices for this type of services that caused quarrels among animal owners.

The decision states that from now on, the transportation of tourists on donkey is possible only after all legal procedures are followed.

In the area of the Lasithi plateau and the vicinity of the cave of Zeus, there are a total of 16 donkey owners providing these services to tourists.

According to the mayor, a license plate will be invented for all donkey, animal owners will have to wear a traditional costume and be provided with cash voucher books that must necessarily be registered. The decision was taken unanimously by all owners of the said animals. If someone new will do this business, he must apply to the municipality. Priority, however, will have students, local residents and persons belonging to socially vulnerable groups of the population.
