Thrapsano – Potter’s village

Okay, we don’t expect you to know what Thrapsano is, but we are going to make sure you will fall in love with this place even before you get there!

Lost somewhere between green lands and flower-covered mountains, Thapsano is small and quiet a traditional village (located some 30 km away from the Heraklion – Crete’s famous and bright capital, near the town of Castelli 6 km).

However, Thrapsano is somewhat well-known among the Greeks – this village claims to have one of the best pottery workshops in the whole country. We recommend to drop by any of them – a great way to discover local art plus to get some very original souvenirs for your homies!

In the village itself we suggest you to take a walk around the central square, visit local coffee spots, go see the lake Livada and, finally, visit some of the most beautiful local churches – the old church of Panagia Pigadiotissa and a silent monastery located few kilometers out of the village. Both are great examples of Greek byzantine architecture and art.

The village is also famous for its traditions, especially feasts and masquerades. The most interesting among them are The Potters festival that takes place every June 17 as well as Eastern celebration. The latter lasts about a week, every day of which is full of different kinds of art and performances. You will have great time there, there is no doubt!

The whole trip to the village from Heraklion will take you around 4-5 hours. We suggest you to rent a car before going – an excursion by bus may turn out not as fun as expected, as you will not as flexible.
