The Fifth Cretan Olive Oil Producers Competition was held several days in March of this year in the city of Rethymno. The competition ended on March 24 with awarding the winners at a special ceremony at the Sentido Pearl Beach Hotel. In total, 96 varieties of Cretan oil took part in the competition; one manufacturer could provide several types of oils from his production. The comparison was carried out in two categories: ordinary oil and BIO: if the manufacturer declares his products as BIO, that is, he did not have the right to use any chemicals when growing olives and producing oil. The Organoleptic evaluation laboratory of the Union of Agricultural Cooperatives of Rethymno checked and evaluated all the samples provided. It conducted enormous examinations on hundreds of different parameters and selected winners in each category: gold, silver and bronze, as well as manufacturers whose products are marked by the high quality mark.

At the ceremony were also discussed the problems of promoting Cretan oil as a brand, because it is much tastier and more valuable in terms of properties than the ones of Italy and Spain, but since the promotion and advertising of oil is missing, it is being in obscurity for all the world today, unfortunately. As the organizers of the competition joked, Coca-Cola without sugar is much more famous than the Greek olive oil, and the first is known only through its good advertising.

After the awards ceremony, a festive banquet was waited for the participants, where all the dishes and snacks were cooked or served with olive oil!
