Mohos – a Traditional Greek Town

Mohos is small and cozy, a traditional town of Greece. If you want to see not the tourist embellished smooth Crete – then you are right here. The town is only 10 km from the popular resorts of Stalis, Malia, in a picturesque mountain valley. Mohos is a center of the olive oil production, and olive groves are stretched for many kilometers around it, where you can walk, breathe fresh and saturated herbal odor air. The road goes through the town to the mountain nunnery of Keras Kardiotissas (Our merciful Lady) and further towards the plateau of Lassithi to the cave of Zeus.

Wonderful views of the mountains and the sea are opened from the nunnery of Our Lady. It’s very famous for a miraculous icon that helps women to have a child. Nowadays in the nunnery it is a copy of this icon. The original was stolen from it and transported to Italy, but they say that the copy has all the same miraculous properties. The exact date of the nunnery’s establishment is unknown, but already in 1333, there are the first written mentions of it. The nunnery has not only a religious, but also a historical value because you can see in the interior frescoes of the 14th century, church utensils, old books and a miraculous chain, which was used to bind the icon to the column.

Mohos is a very nice authentic old Greek town in the mountains. Narrow and winding streets in flowers, a square with a bunch of taverns around it in the center of the town, small operating churches (one says that they are 28 there). Local people are very hospitable and smiling. From May 20 to September 25, on Wednesdays, they arrange in Mohos “Cretan evenings” with ethnic dances and songs, and many people gather there. Going to the cave of Zeus, take a stop to walk around this beautiful place. Go to the square, visit taverns or cafes – they cook very tasty there.

After once having eaten on the road there, many tourists regularly come again for a traditional Cretan dinner. Visit the family tavern ODYSSEUS in Mohos, which was founded already in 1938. Since then, it offers the best quality, without losing the traditions of Cretan cuisine. Try lamb ribs, we recommend you!

You can get into Mohos in many ways, most of the tourists come by car (car rental thenewrentcar.com). The mountain scenic hiking trail from Stalis (5-6 km), is still popular among tourists (video on it at: youtu.be/RUTSjxme-f0). However, in hot weather, the road through the mountains is not for everyone.

Therefore, you can use a simple and truly tourist way – go there on a train. From Malia starts so-called “happy” train – a tractor, designed in the form of a locomotive, to which are attached three trailers. It has a scheduled route with various stops and excursions, including in Mohos. It is better to buy tickets for an excursion to Mohos in advance. The trip will last half a day.

To use such a train is one happiness. You are going accompanied with Greek music, and everyone smiling is waving at you. Crete is famous for its mountain serpentines, and you will be able to ride them. While climbing the mountain, all viewers have a wonderful panorama of the coast of Malia. At the highest point, there will be a stop to make beautiful photos.
